Thinking about getting your Vehicle Loading Crane (TLC) license (TLILIC0024 Licence to operate a vehicle loading crane (capacity 10-meter tonnes and above)) but not sure what to expect? You’re not alone. If you’re working in construction, logistics, or transport and your job involves operating a truck-mounted crane, this is the qualification you need.
Read on for answers to our frequently asked questions.
Do I need experience to enrol in vehicle loading crane training?
No prior experience is required. The course is designed for both newcomers and experienced workers who haven’t been formally trained. Our trainers will guide you through everything step-by-step, and we use real-world scenarios so you can build confidence quickly.
How long does it take to get a vehicle loading crane license?
The course typically runs over 5 days. It includes both theory and practical components, as well as assessment.
Who should get a VLC license?
Anyone who works with (or around and planning to work with) a truck-mounted crane to lift and shift materials. Common careers for VLC license holders include:
- Labourers or offsiders
- Site delivery personnel
- Utility or council workers
- Civil construction crew members
But, if you already hold a slewing mobile crane licence, you’re also qualified to operate a VLC. However, a licensed dogger will be required.
Do I need a dogman ticket as well?
Not necessarily. If you’re using pre-slung loads or lifting with fixed lifting attachments (like a hook or jib), a dogman ticket is not required. However, if you’re using slings or performing complex lifts that require load direction, a dogman may be required to assist, or you’ll need to be licensed in both. We recommend obtaining your dogman licence to ensure you are covered for any occasion whilst operating a VLC.
Where does the vehicle loading crane training take place?
Training is delivered at our Richlands facility in Brisbane, which features a purpose-built training yard, truck-mounted cranes, and all equipment needed for hands-on learning. We replicate site environments, so you leave feeling prepared and qualified.
Is a VLC licence issued by Ascent recognised nationwide?
Yes. This unit is recognised in every Australian state and territory.
